— Samurai

The Samurai is a unit of the Dragon Clan.

Overview[]

On the field of battle, there is no greater force than the Samurai. Ferocious as tigers, wise as Dragons, they are brilliant tacticians as well as supreme warriors, defending the honor of their Clan above all else. Clad in gleaming steel plate, the Samurai are masters of bow and blade, wielding both with all the power and subtlety of the ancient masters. Few can stand against such a force.

It is said that even in death, a true Samurai never tastes defeat. When surrounded by hordes of enemies, the Samurai always chooses to disembowel himself rather than fall to an enemy's blade. Such courage releases a storm of righteousness that devastates the Samurai's enemies even as he passes serenely into the next world.

When the clan faces a serious threat, four brave Samurai may summon the Dragon through sacrificing their lives near the Dragon's Monument in order to make the Dragon itself unleash it's fiery power upon the enemies.

Usage[]

The Samurai is a 'golden-mean' 'lightning-bruiser:' thanks to his high health, decent attack damage, fast attack rate, and swift movement speed despite heavy armour, which gives him good resistances against cutting (down to 25%) and blunt weapons (to 50%) commonly used by other melee units. When dying, the Samurai unleashes powerful explosive damage upon surrounding enemy units; this can be quite devastating as units weak to explosives may be outright killed by Seppuku's blast. Unfortunately, the Samurai is exceptionally weak against magical and explosive attacks, and in most multiplayer matches, Samurais often die during the first moments of the battle, with units such as Musketeers, Unclean Ones and Warlocks being quite common choices.

The Samurai have two types of battle gears: Yang Blade generates Yang score to earn Yang tokens with each stroke of the Samurai's sword, and the Samurai's sword shall hit harder with the more Yang tokens possessed by the Dragon player, up to hitting 2x more damage by the Yang Blade when at maximum Yang tokens. This ability consumes 6% stamina per second when walking or attacking, or 8.5% when running. This is the preferred battle gear as it provides a global benefit for the Dragon player (Yang tokens).

The second battle gear is Dragon Skin, which shields the Samurai from all missile weapons, including those whose inherent high damage would be further augmented by the Samurai's weaknesses (like Musketeer's explosive gun fire or Unclean One's magical Corruption Ball). Unfortunately Dragon Skin is a very micro-intensive way of making the Samurai be more effective in combat, especially when compared to his Yang Blade battle gear. If activated during combat it can drain from 7% stamina per second (walking or attacking) all the way up to 9.5% stamina per second (running). This means that a Samurai effectively has 10 to 14 seconds of missile invulnerability, which by the end of it would make the Samurai an easy target to enemy rangers (since the Samurai would have no stamina left to run them down). For Dragon Skin to work effectively, the Samurai player needs to put significant amount of attention and micro on when to activate and deactivate this ability; when a battle starts, the Samurais must not be distracted by enemy melee fighters, determine if there are enemy rangers, activate the battle gear if they're present and run straight to the enemy rangers (remember that 10-second stamina window!), and when your Samurais are finally tying up the rangers in melee, THEN you can finally deactivate Dragon Skin. If done well, the Samurais would still have roughly 60% of his stamina left, which should be just enough to chase down enemy rangers that are attempting to flee. This is absolutely NOT a 'set-n-forget' type of battle gear. This ability pays off when the enemy has massed up a significant amount of rangers for his army.

Requirements: Shrine Requirements: Fireworks Factory
At the Dragon Shrine, the Samurai's blade is blessed with the ability to perform heroic deeds, adding to the glory and mystical power of his Clan with each stroke. Continually drains stamina when activated. The Fireworks Factory can treat a Samurai's armor so that, when he focuses his mystical powers, it renders him entirely immune to all missile weapons. However, it takes great concentration and stamina to transform steel into the Skin of the Dragon. Continually drains stamina when activated.

Notes[]

  • A Samurai's Seppuku deals 80 Explosive damage in a radius of 5 units. Units with weakness to Explosive may take up to 160 damage (Ronin, other Samurai, etc).
    • Samurai cannot use Seppuku while mounted.
    • Seppuku is arguably one of the fastest ways of gaining Yang, which can give up to 3 Yang, depending on the situation and factors that affect Yang acquisition. This fits with the Dragon Clan's adherence to the principles of Yang, particularly of upholding honor in combat and selfless sacrifice.
    • When a Samurai is the last unit killed just before player's defeat, his alliance will become neutral, and Seppuku will not deal damage to enemies.
  • Unlike Ronin's Yin Blade Battle Gear, Yang Blade of Samurai only increases his sword's damage by 10% with every Yang gained, without changing Samurai's damage type.
  • Samurai's Dragon Skin does not grant immunity to negative status effects, and Yvaine's Ice Prison.
